Do You Need to Run More to Improve 5K Time or Add Strength Training for Runners
Many runners hit a familiar point in 5K training. The early improvements come quickly, then the same weekly routine stops producing the same result. The obvious answer seems to be more miles. Sometimes that works. Sometimes it simply adds fatigue without much extra speed.
A recent LAMBS Fitness poster comparing “Running Only” with “Running + Strength Training” raises a useful question: do faster 5K runners just need higher weekly running mileage, or can strength training help runners improve with a more balanced plan?
The honest answer is that appropriate running volume matters, but mileage alone is not the whole picture. A better 5K depends on aerobic fitness, running economy, training intensity, recovery, strength, experience, consistency, and individual response.
Strength training for runners is not a shortcut that replaces running. It is a tool that can support better running when it is programmed well.

Running more can help, but only when the extra work is useful
For a 5K, running fitness is still the foundation. The event relies heavily on aerobic energy production, even though it feels fast and uncomfortable. Regular running helps develop:

A strong 5K plan does not need to be complicated. It should include enough running to develop fitness, enough intensity to prepare for race pace, enough strength work to support performance, and enough recovery to adapt.
For many recreational runners, a balanced week might include 3 to 5 runs and 1 to 2 strength sessions. The exact number depends on current fitness, training age, injury history, and time available.
Keep easy runs genuinely easy
Easy running builds aerobic fitness without creating too much fatigue. It also allows more total training to be completed across the week.
A common mistake is running easy days too hard. This can make interval sessions worse and reduce recovery. Easy pace should feel controlled. Conversation should be possible.
Include faster running with a clear purpose
To improve 5K time, most runners need some exposure to faster work. This could include:
Short intervals faster than 5K effort
Repeats around 5K pace
Tempo or threshold-style running
Hill reps
Strides after easy runs
