Future Olympic Gold Medal Star? Why Amelie Pelta Is One to Watch

As a strength and conditioning coach, I have had the privilege of watching many young athletes develop through sport. Some show promise early, some progress steadily, and a rare few stand out as genuinely special.

For me, Amelie Pelta is one of those athletes.

I have followed Amelie’s development for a long time through the junior weightlifting circuit, and what impresses me most is not just the numbers she is lifting. It is the complete picture: her technical ability, strength, consistency, competitive experience and apparent composure under pressure.

Amelie is not simply a talented young lifter. She is an exciting prospect for the future of British weightlifting.

A remarkable progression

Amelie’s progress has been impressive. Having originally come into weightlifting from a gymnastics background, she has developed rapidly and reportedly increased her total by around 70kg within her first two years of competition.

That kind of progression requires far more than natural ability. It reflects discipline, patience, quality coaching and a willingness to learn.

At the 2024 European Junior & U23 Championships, competing in the women’s 55kg category, Amelie completed all six of her lifts. She recorded a 73kg snatch and a 94kg clean and jerk, finishing with a 167kg total. Those performances included British records, and she finished eighth in Europe in the U20 category.

Her development continued at the 2025 European Youth Championships in Madrid. Competing in the 58kg category, she produced an 81kg snatch and a 101kg clean and jerk for a 182kg total. She won silver in both the clean and jerk and overall total, becoming a double silver medallist.

These are significant achievements in their own right, but they are even more exciting when viewed as part of a longer progression rather than isolated results.

Why Amelie stands out

The first thing that catches my attention is Amelie’s technical ability. Olympic weightlifting is an incredibly demanding sport. Strength matters, but strength without timing, balance, speed and precision will only take an athlete so far.

Amelie shows the kind of technical foundation that gives her room to keep improving. Her lifts look controlled, purposeful and increasingly mature. She appears to understand how to use her strength efficiently, rather than relying solely on effort.

Her strength is also developing at the right time. Moving through different weight categories and continuing to build her snatch, clean and jerk and total demonstrates that she has plenty of potential still to unlock.

Just as importantly, she has shown consistency. Completing six successful lifts at a major competition is not easy, particularly when competing internationally. That tells me she has the focus and composure required to perform when it matters.

From junior promise to senior success

Following an athlete through the junior ranks is one of the most rewarding parts of sport. It is easy to notice someone only when they appear on the Olympic stage, but the real story begins years earlier—in training halls, local competitions, domestic championships and junior internationals.

That is why watching Amelie’s journey is so exciting.

We are seeing the gradual development of an athlete rather than a finished product. She is gaining experience, learning how to manage competition, adapting to stronger opposition and building confidence year after year.

Her appearances at European Youth and European Junior/U23 level are important steps. The next challenge will be continuing that progression into senior international competition, where the standard becomes even higher and every lift carries more pressure.

There are no guarantees in sport. Junior success does not automatically translate into senior medals, and Olympic success depends on many factors. However, Amelie has already shown several of the qualities that can form the foundation of a long and successful career.

Could she become an Olympic champion?

That is the bold question.

My honest answer is that I believe Amelie has the potential to become a British Olympic medallist—and, if her development continues in the right direction, potentially an Olympic gold medallist one day.

That prediction comes with an important qualification. Olympic gold is never guaranteed. It requires years of uninterrupted development, excellent coaching, good health, smart training, strong support and the ability to perform at major championships against the best lifters in the world.

For Amelie, the road to Olympic gold could involve:

- Continuing to refine her technique

- Developing greater strength while maintaining movement quality

- Staying healthy through the demands of high-level training

- Working within a high-quality coaching and support team

- Gaining experience at European, World and senior international championships

- Successfully transitioning from junior to senior competition

- Learning how to manage the pressure of selection and Olympic competition

If those pieces come together, there is no reason to place a limit on what she might achieve.

Inspiring the next generation of female weightlifters

Amelie’s rise is also important beyond her own career.

Female weightlifters in Britain continue to play a vital role in changing perceptions of strength sports. Athletes who demonstrate power, athleticism, discipline and confidence can inspire more young women and girls to try Olympic weightlifting, strength training and competitive sport.

Seeing someone develop from the junior circuit into a potential Team GB weightlifting athlete makes the pathway feel real. Young athletes can look at Amelie and see that progress is possible—that the early competitions, technical lessons and hard training sessions can eventually lead to the biggest stages in sport.

That visibility matters.

The more successful female weightlifters Britain produces, the more opportunities there are to encourage participation, challenge outdated stereotypes and show that strength is something to celebrate.

My prediction

I have watched a lot of talented athletes over the years, but Amelie feels different.

Her technical ability, strength, progression, consistency and composure give me genuine reasons to be excited. Predicting Olympic success is always uncertain, but I believe we could genuinely be watching the early stages of a future British Olympic champion developing in front of us.

Amelie Pelta has already achieved a great deal at junior and European level. Now the challenge is to keep building, keep learning and keep progressing towards the senior international stage.

I believe we could be watching a future British Olympic gold medallist develop in front of us—and I cannot wait to see how far she can go.
