When I started coaching four years ago, I never imagined the journey would take me through more than 3,500 sessions with people from all walks of life. Each session has been a lesson, not just in fitness, but in understanding what it truly means to help someone change their relationship with exercise and their body. I’m Aaron Lamb, founder of LAMBS Fitness, and I want to share what this experience has taught me about coaching, connection, and transformation.
The Wide Range of People I’ve Had the Privilege to Coach
Over the years, I’ve worked with a diverse group of clients. This variety has been one of the richest parts of my coaching experience. Here are some of the people I’ve supported:
Beginners who are just starting their fitness journey and need guidance on how to move safely and confidently.
People returning to exercise after a break, injury, or life changes, looking to rebuild strength and stamina.
Runners aiming to improve performance or recover from setbacks.
Parents balancing family life with personal health goals.
Post-pregnancy clients working to regain strength and confidence in their bodies.
Younger athletes developing skills and conditioning for their sports.
Older adults focusing on mobility, strength, and overall well-being.
People preparing for military or service fitness tests, where specific physical standards must be met.
Individuals training for events like 5Ks, marathons, Tough Mudder, and other challenges.
Those rebuilding confidence or working through difficult relationships with exercise, often after negative past experiences.
Each person brings a unique story, set of goals, and challenges. This diversity has shaped how I approach coaching.
The Biggest Lesson: No Two People Are the Same
After thousands of sessions, the clearest truth is that good coaching is never about handing out the same plan to everyone. Fitness is personal. What works for one person might not work for another. The key is to understand the individual behind the goals.
That means paying attention to:
Their goals — what they want to achieve and why.
Their confidence — how comfortable they feel with movement and exercise.
Their body — strengths, limitations, injuries, and how they respond to training.
Their lifestyle — work, family, stress levels, and time availability.
The kind of support they need — motivation, accountability, education, or just someone to listen.
This approach requires patience, observation, and flexibility. It’s about meeting people where they are and building from there.
What Clients Have Taught Me About Coaching
Listening to feedback from clients has been invaluable. Here are some themes that come up often:
Clients feel listened to. They appreciate when I take the time to understand their concerns and goals before jumping into a workout plan.
Sessions feel friendly and tailored. People notice when workouts are adjusted to their needs and preferences, not just a one-size-fits-all routine.
I’m knowledgeable and professional. Clear explanations about technique and training principles help clients feel confident and safe.
I notice details others may miss. Small adjustments in form or pacing can make a big difference in results and injury prevention.
Training adapts to how clients feel on the day. Some days are harder than others, and being flexible keeps progress steady without burnout.
Building confidence is a priority. Many clients come with doubts about their abilities, and helping them believe in themselves is as important as physical gains.
Support extends beyond sessions. Whether it’s advice on recovery, nutrition, or mindset, ongoing support helps clients stay on track.
Plans are realistic but effective. Setting achievable goals keeps motivation high and progress consistent.
Examples From Real Coaching Experiences
One client came to me after years of avoiding exercise due to knee pain and low confidence. Instead of pushing her into intense workouts, we started with gentle strength and mobility exercises tailored to her comfort level. Over months, she built strength, improved her knee stability, and gained the confidence to join group classes. Her progress wasn’t just physical — it was a transformation in how she saw herself.
Another client was a busy parent training for a marathon. We worked around his unpredictable schedule, focusing on quality over quantity. By adjusting workouts based on his energy levels and family commitments, he stayed consistent and crossed the finish line without injury.
For a young athlete preparing for military fitness tests, the focus was on functional strength and endurance. We tracked progress carefully, adjusted training loads, and addressed weaknesses. The client passed the tests with confidence, knowing the preparation was thorough and personalized.
Why Experience Matters in Coaching
Experience is more than just numbers. It’s about the depth of understanding that comes from seeing many different bodies, goals, and challenges. It’s about knowing when to push and when to pull back. It’s about reading between the lines and spotting what a client might not say out loud.
With over 3,500 sessions behind me, I’ve learned to trust my instincts and adapt quickly. This experience helps me create coaching plans that are not only effective but sustainable and enjoyable.
